Savoy Swing Club Supports Dance On Capitol Hill
Vol 1, Issue 4: Fall 1996
The SSC board of directors voted unanimously to donate $500.00 to support Dance On Capitol Hill (DOCH). The board felt that one way SSC could give back to the community would be to support the studio that has been our "home" for
Friday Night Practice sessions for the last three years. Shirly Jenkins, Artistic Director for DOCH, was ecstatic with the gift. "It was the talk of the office for an entire week."
The check was presented on July 28th at a Friday Night Practice session by the group pictured. The money was used for DOCH’s Dance Camp program. According to Ms. Jenkins, our support helped DOCH reach more children this year than ever before. "There are so many things…the biggest success stories … are about the children being able to learn follow-through and self-esteem…things that are very difficult in their turbulent lives. One of three boys who had the biggest problems with paying attention and being obedient turned out to become one of the stars of the show…He’s going to be taking tap and hip-hop in the fall and will be on our scholarship program. I want to let SSC know that your donation was a real heart-warmer…it fits into our philosophy of a community coming together in a very human way…The kids really, really appreciated it!"
I’m sure that all of you reading this will agree that we look forward to a continuing strong relationship between SSC and DOCH! Dance On!!!
